At any hospital where I worked it seemed like it was an automatic protocol to put a patient on O2 by nasal cannula. And yes, you can have a bacterial infection and a viral infection at the same time.

In this case the rate of oxygen flow may be higher than what you saw.. That's the impression I am getting.
